The NEW BMW X3

Filed under: future — lloyd @ 9:23 am

BMW will be releasing the new second Generation X3 in January 2011  Anticipated to be one of the most economical and efficient  cars of its class.

x3

With plans for it be unveiled in October at the Paris motor show, the X3 is quite different to old old model.  Re-engineered inside and out the off roader has different feel.

The X3 has grown slightly and this had resulted in further boot space.  However it is not a huge growth:  78mm on length, 15mm on the wheelbase  and 14mm on the height. That may not sound like much but it allows for 70ltr more boot space bringing its total to 550 litres

Much is being made of its engines efficiency.   The entry level 2.0 manual had a combined economy of 50.4mpg and generates 181bhp.  Its closest rival, the Audi Q5 has an economy  of only 46.6mpg and produces only 170bhp

Spied in testing: Film of new X3 being tested on the road before its release.

In addition, other engine choices include a 2.0 diesel generating 181bhp.  It comes with the option of either a standard six speed manual or an optional eight speed automatic.

At  the top end of the spectrum we have a turbo charged, 6 cylinder 3.0 monster that produces 302bhp.

All models come with efficiency savings technology.  All Gear boxes operate a standard start-stop function and work in conjunction with a brake energy recuperation system.  an addition feature is the new electronic power steering system.

BMW have improved their equipment levels for the base entry model.  Inside you will find a multifunction steering wheel, elegant trim and revised trim.  The old X3 was a little lacklustre in the interior department but this model has more in common with BMWs 3 series.

All will be available in the UK in 4 wheel drive.   More model engine options to come later next year.  The X3 will be build in America at BMWs Spartanburg plant.

Filed under: future — lloyd @ 9:14 am

bmw m05-09-02

BMW has been report to be continuing development of its three cylinder car engine.  The engine which is based upon BMWS commonly used 500c per cylinder design is set to become part of the engine options for the 1 series.

The engines design takes advantages in engineering such as direct injection and turbo charging

According to Autocar “this is not an entry level unit.  It’s a serious, refined, sporting engine with great CO2 figures.”   They also assert that the next 1-series has been engineered to cope with the unique problems faced by a three-cylinder engine.  These include noise and vibration

BMW currently uses three-cylinder engines in some of its motorcycles.

Review: BMW 3 Series Convertible

Filed under: Uncategorized — lloyd @ 1:10 pm

The BMW 3 Series is an executive cabriolet.   The Original is known for its good handling and great looks but what about its topless counterpart.

One of the first changes you will notice with the new 3 series convertible is that the roof has been changed.   BMW have now opted for folding metal roof as opposed to the old canvass.  The roof is well integrated into the rest of the car.  You can’t tell it’s a convertible from the front.  The only clear differentiating markers are a flat and curvier rear screen and unique tail lights.    The designers have done well to avoid a bulbous rear end that so many cabriolets suffer.

Convertibles are notorious for their handling, however the BMW is different.  It feels taut, has good body control and can compete with any of its rivals.  It is great through the corners and there’s no undue vibrations around the A pillars.

There are a range of different engine sizes, all of which are quite impressive.  If you after that little bit extra, then you should go for the 3.0-litre six cylinder unit.  Available as both a petrol and diesel option with either automatic or manual gearboxes.  The gearboxes are smooth and go quite well with the car.    All offer great fuel economy too.
There are some downsides though.  As with a lot of convertibles, the boot size is limited due to roof storage.  BMW however, have managed to make this car a full 4 seater and the roof can rise up at the press of a button to increase access space to the boot.  The prices are quite high compared to some of its rival;   the base model costs £30,000 but does come will a generous helping of equipment.

This car is full BMW innovation such as special seats which reflect the suns heat.  This means that even if you leave the roof down in the baking sun all day, they won’t be scorching hot when you return.

All in all, a good motor: BMW reliability and branding combined with performance and fuel saving technology.   This car is certainly not a red herring.

Efficiency Dynamic Technologies

Filed under: engines — lloyd @ 9:53 am

BMWs range of new vehicles all includes the innovative Efficiency Dynamic technologies.  These technologies are a combination of ideas with the sole purpose of reducing fuel use and costs.

These include,

Auto start stop:  This technology will turn off your engine whilst you are at a standstill.   When you depress the clutch again, the engine will automatically start again.

Brake energy regeneration:  This innovation recharges the battery whilst your vehicle is freewheeling or breaking.Electric power Steering:  Instead of using a conventional hydraulics system, BMW use and electric motor system.   The System only uses power when the steering wheel is actively turned.
Optimum Shift Indicator:  This displays the most fuel efficient gear selection on the dashboard.

Lightweight Engineering:  By lowering the overall weight of the vehicle by using lightweight materials.

Reduced rolling resistance tires:  These tyres have a special heat resistance anti distortion material which reduces friction.

Low friction Fluid:  By The fluids in the vehicle are engineered to reduce friction and deliver maximum performance and efficiency.

Active aerodynamics:  By closing the air vents during the first part of the journey, the car’s engine reaches its optimum temperature quicker.  The vents open to cool the engine when required.

All these technologies lead to an increase in performance and efficiency.  Good for both you, your pocket and the environment

Olympic Partners.

Filed under: Uncategorized — lloyd @ 11:04 am

BMW have been chosen to be the official automotive partners to the London 2012 Olympics.   Due to the success of BMWs efficiency dynamics programme and its ability to reduce CO2 emissions.  The London committee of the Olympic and Paralympics games (LOOG) has decided to choose BMW as its sustainability partner.    This means that BMW will provide official fleet vehicles to the Games.   It will produce around 4000 cars and motorbikes for the purpose of transporting athletes and officials around the Games.

Former British Olympic athlete  and chairman of the LOCOG Sebastian Coe said “The size of BMW as a global brand, coupled with its presence and investment in the UK, meant that it was a natural fit.”.  He continued “operationally an automotive deal is vital for organising committee.  So I am thrilled BMW is on board.  They share our vision to stage sustainable games in 2012”.

BMW has beat stiff completion to get the deal.  The LOCOG committee set tough emission targets for the games.  They suggested a maximum average of 120g CO2/KM.   To which BMW surpassed.  BMW will provide a range of vehicles including hybrid cars, motorcycles, bikes and conventional cars.

BMW are happy to be part of the games.  Ian Robertson, member of the board of directors said: “Sportiness is the core of our identity and the core of the BMW brand.  As the world’s most sustainable car manufacturer, we promote and support the idea of sustainable Games.

Most of the fleet will be based in London, however some will be in places such as the famous Old Trafford stadium, home to Manchester United.

BMW Imports From The USA

Filed under: International — admin @ 6:45 pm

Many car breakers have known this for some time, it is cheaper to buy a BMW from the States than here in the UK.  The reason we are using breaker yards as an example is because of the huge amount of BMW American Imports that come to the UK, and back to countries throughout Europe as salvage for the parts, which have a greater demand that supply over here.  In the rest of Europe it is a different story with these cars being left hand drive and suitable for the roads on the continent, the only stumbling pint is making sure these vehicles are safe to drive on the road. There is another type of BMW American Imports and that  suits the classic car market. the warmer climate across in many States of the USA. mean older cars last longer and can be more original. There are some in the UK, who do not care about what side the steering wheel is on.

Buying BMW American Imports is not as difficult as you may think, but the costs can add up for VAT, delivery and shipping, so a calculator and realistic budget is something of a necessity.   It is worth all the costs for the breaker yards selling certain engines for £2000 a piece, it is worth the cost to European buyers who can buy a 5 series cheaper from the States than at home often with more accessories  and it is worth it to certain BMW classic car enthusiast, who can buy a BMW American Import not only cheaper, but is likely to be in better condition and more original than a rain soaked European model.

There are certain American Import auctions online, that will  allow you to bid with eth American trade guys, so you do not always need to go through a dealer or broker. This does mean you need to know your onions so, plenty of research and patience is  a basic requirement, but it could pay dividends for those who take the time to do so.

BMW 3 Series 2011 Model Review By Rosenthal

Filed under: reviews — admin @ 2:14 pm

Continuing the them of the new BMW 3 series, we want to show this excellent video from the USA form Rosenthal.  We often see vehicle reviews on TV and on the web but we especially like the way this was done because they put a 2011 BMW 3 Series next to the 2010 version and compared it so we can get a real feel of the improvements or changes over the previous model. The test drive is done from the passenger seat, something we are not used to seeing, it is normally the driver who speaks, something different.  Professionally presented this car has the X drive (not sure if this available in the UK) and has the M sport package so does not represent the full BMW 3 Series range and so could be a bit biased on the model. The other obvious fact is this review in the USA when fuel is cheaper than in the UK (even though most Americans cannot believe the price of gas) , so the UK market is probably more orientated to the diesel engine market, especially when BMW has a fantastic range of frugal engines delivering over 70mpg and keeping the benefit in kind figure on company cars to as low as 13%. Most BMW 3 Series Lease deals taken out are based on frugal engines and low CO2 emissions. here is the video presented by Rosenthal.

Stunning 2010 3 Series Convertible

Filed under: reviews — admin @ 5:00 pm

BMW have in most cases made good looking cars, although in recent years there has been criticism regarding the styling, where it has been just too bold in certain cases, especially the 5 series.  Even so, this still has not stoped other manufacturers mirroring the lines, including the French, even marketing their cars as looking German. But with the new 2010 BMW 3 Series convertible, you can throw the criticism in the bin, as this car is just stunning in every way. The hard top technology is now in BMW’s vehicles also, which adds to the practicability  of the cars and takes away the edge certain French cars had whilst BMW stayed firm with soft tops. Match this with the driving experience and engine technology and you cant imaging this being anything bit a winner. There are still very few videos out there, of this new design, but this one is available and shows the car with its roof up at the end.

Why not consider this for bmw car lease
